Sometimes we think adventure has to look big. A road trip across the country, a season spent working in Yellowstone, a new business idea, a mountain view, a campsite, a new city, or a fresh start. And yes, Rich and I love those kinds of adventures. A lot of our life has been shaped by chasing them, creating them, and trying to leave enough room for the unexpected.

But lately, we’ve been thinking about a different kind of adventure. The quieter kind. The kind that happens in the in-between moments when life doesn’t necessarily look exciting from the outside, but something meaningful is still happening underneath the surface.

Adventure is not only where you go. Sometimes it is how you choose to see where you already are.

The Quiet Kind of Adventure

It’s the slow morning coffee (in a Insulated French Press ☕️😊) before the day starts moving too fast. It’s the walk where nothing dramatic happens, but somehow your head feels clearer by the time you get back. It’s the conversation that starts with, “What if we tried this?” and slowly turns into a new plan. It’s the tiny decision to do something differently than you did yesterday.

Those moments don’t always feel like adventure when you’re in them. They don’t always make a great photo, and they definitely don’t come with a dramatic soundtrack or a scenic overlook. But we’re starting to believe they matter just as much as the bigger, more obvious adventures.

The truth is, the big adventures are usually built from small choices. A trip begins long before the tires hit the road. A business begins long before the website goes live. A new chapter begins long before anyone else can see that something is changing. It often starts with a little restlessness, a small idea, a conversation over coffee, or a quiet decision that maybe life could look just a little different.

What “Out There” Means to Us

For us, “out there” has never only meant being physically somewhere else. Of course, we love travel. We love national parks, international cities, long drives, quaint towns, winding roads, and discovering places we’ve never been before. But being “out there” is also a mindset. It’s staying curious. It’s being willing to try. It’s paying attention to what’s around you instead of moving through life on autopilot.

That sounds simple, but it’s not always easy. There are plenty of days when life feels more like a checklist than an adventure. Work, emails, errands, bills, decisions, plans, and then more decisions. Some days we feel like we’re building toward something exciting, and other days we’re just trying to keep up with everything that needs to get done.

And honestly, we don’t always get it right. Sometimes we forget to slow down. Sometimes we get so focused on building the next thing or stressing about something that we forget to enjoy the thing we’re already living. Sometimes we talk about wanting more freedom and then accidentally fill every available minute with tasks.

Maybe you can relate to that too.

Sometimes the most adventurous thing we can do is slow down long enough to notice the life we’re already in.

Why We Started Sharing This Journey

That’s one of the reasons we wanted Zoe and Rich Out There to exist in the first place. Not because we have everything figured out, but because we’re figuring it out as we go. We wanted a place to share the real version of travel, business, everyday adventure, and life between the big milestones.

Not the perfectly polished version where everything is planned, beautiful, and easy. The real version. The version where you can be excited and unsure at the same time. Where you can love where you are and still dream about what’s next. Where you can want more adventure without needing to blow up your whole life to find it.

Because adventure does not always require a dramatic leap. Sometimes it starts with giving yourself permission to notice what is already around you. A new trail close to home, a different route on your evening walk, a notebook page full of ideas, a local coffee shop you’ve never tried, or a weekend with no big plans except to wander a little.

Small Moments Can Wake Something Up

Those small things can wake something up. Rich and I have noticed that when we make room for little moments like that, the bigger ideas tend to follow. We start dreaming again. We start asking better questions. We remember that life is not just something to manage, but something to participate in.

That doesn’t mean every day has to be exciting. Honestly, we don’t think that’s the goal. Some days are for laundry, catching up, grocery runs, quiet evenings, and doing what needs to be done. But even those ordinary days can have a little bit of “out there” in them if we’re paying attention.

Maybe that’s the invitation for this week. Not to plan a huge trip, reinvent your whole life, or pressure yourself into doing something impressive. Just look for one small way to feel a little more awake in your own life.

Step outside for a few extra minutes. Start the idea you keep putting off. Take the scenic route. Ask yourself what you actually want, not just what needs to get done. Do one small thing that reminds you there is more available than routine.

You do not have to change everything to feel a little more alive. Sometimes one small shift is enough.

Our Invitation This Week

That’s what we’re trying to do too. We’re still learning how to balance building, exploring, resting, and dreaming. Some weeks we feel like we’re moving in the right direction. Other weeks we’re just trying to keep up. But through all of it, we keep coming back to this idea: adventure is not only where you go. It’s how you choose to see where you already are.

And maybe the in-between moments are not something to rush through on the way to the next big thing.

Maybe they are the adventure too.

Here’s to noticing more, wandering often, and finding a little adventure right where we are.
